Some social media users claim the “pink salt trick”—a mix of water, lemon, and pink salt—helps them lose weight and reduce inflammation. Experts say there’s no scientific proof to back up these claims.
Can Pink Salt Help With Weight Loss?
There’s no credible scientific evidence that pink salt speeds up metabolism, detoxes the body, or promotes weight loss, according to Natalie Allen, RD, a clinical associate professor of nutrition and dietetics in the School of Health Sciences at Missouri State University.
She explained that pink salt’s main nutritional role is providing sodium, which is essential in small amounts but often overconsumed by many Americans.
Some say pink salt helps with weight loss because it may promote hydration, but any type of salt can increase thirst, said Dara Ford, PhD, RD, program director of the Master of Science in Nutrition Education at American University.
“While sodium is a required nutrient, most of us get more than enough,” Ford said. “The presence of additional trace minerals is varied at best and does not provide more nutrients than a balanced, healthy diet.”
She emphasized that the best sources of essential nutrients are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
If someone says they lost weight from drinking pink salt water with lemon, it’s likely because they swapped out sugary drinks, stayed better hydrated, or shed temporary water weight—not body fat.
“Perhaps the beverage is replacing a meal, in which case fewer calories would be consumed,” Ford added. “There is nothing magical happening here.”
How Is Pink Salt Different From Table Salt?
Pink salt is mostly sodium chloride, though it may contain trace minerals like potassium, magnesium, and iron oxide, which give it its pink hue, said Allen
She said that nutritionally, it’s very similar to table and sea salt, and it’s usually not fortified with iodine.
“Pink salt” is a catch-all term that includes many different commercially available products, said Ford.
“In theory, Himalayan pink salt from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan has some trace minerals present that would offer some contribution to micronutrient needs,” she said.
But in reality, the amounts are too small to make a real difference.
Are There Any Benefits to Pink Salt Water?
Allen noted that pink salt water does provide hydration, a small vitamin C boost from lemon, and electrolytes from the salt.
“As a dietitian, I want my clients to stay well-hydrated, and this drink can help,” she said.
However, Allen said the health benefits mostly come from drinking water, not from special properties of the salt.
It’s also important to pay attention to your sodium consumption and to avoid adding extra salt to your diet if you’re already getting enough.
What This Means For You
Drinking water with lemon and pink salt may slightly improve your hydration levels, but it won’t lead to weight loss or any other miraculous health benefits.
